Officials Discuss Plans For Walnut Street Improvements

A long-anticipated street reconstruction project in Yankton is about to begin.
Walnut Street’s reconstruction from Second Street to Fourth Street is set to get under way in the coming months, with some pedestrian-friendly enhancements thanks to local initiatives.
City Manager Amy Nelson told the Press & Dakotan that the project’s roots go back to improvements at the Meridian Bridge.
"The Walnut Street project really started a long time ago with the Meridian Plaza," Nelson said. "All along, there was a concept of connecting the river to the downtown and spilling those improvements out on to the streetscape from the plaza. That concept has been there for quite some time."
Following the completion of the Meridian Plaza, the city turned its focus towards the reconstruction of Walnut Street, she said.
"When we started doing our strategic planning sessions, the City Commission reiterated to me that the downtown continues to be a main priority for them and they wanted to continue to make improvements downtown," she said. "To complete and move forward with this type of project seemed like a natural next step."
