Community Growth, Quality of Life, Education

In its first years, the Boys & Girls Club of Yankton hasn’t gotten the numbers it was seeking — instead, it’s been far greater.

The daily usage at the Yankton site has grown tenfold since its beginning, according to Tim Lease, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of the Northern Plains. He shared the story of the club’s growth with Yankton Area Progressive Growth (YAPG) members Tuesday.

“When we first started (in Yankton), we had 20 youth a day who were using the club. Now, we’re near 200, and we have an average daily attendance of 46,” he told the members at their quarterly meeting.

The Yankton BGC offers programming each day and operates 1,496 hours a year, compared to a school year of 1,225 hours in the classroom, Lease said.

YAPG partners with the Boys & Girls Club of Yankton, and Lease spoke about the club and its impact on the region. “We appreciate the partnership with YAPG and your commitment to the young people of our community,” he said.

The Yankton club isn’t good just for the youth who use it — it’s a good investment for the entire community and its economy, he said. The impact goes beyond those employed at the facility, he added.

The club provides a safe place for young people after school, which eases the minds of working parents with children in the program, Lease said. The club also provides a major draw for keeping families in Yankton and attracting new families to the community, he said.
