Recognizing Economic Developers in May
1 May 2019
May 6-11 is International Economic Development Week (EDW). It’s an opportune time to reflect on the importance of local economic development efforts to building a vibrant and sustainable community.
The International Economic Development Council created EDW in 2016 to help raise awareness for the profession. Economic development organizations are often misunderstood because their activities happen behind the scenes, outside of the public eye.
The Yankton Area Progressive Growth (YAPG) is an economic development organization that provides a comprehensive range of critical services geared towards building the local economy through area job development, private investment and wealth generation. It works in partnership with the City of Yankton, Yankton County, the Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce and many other key organizations towards these goals.
Here are some of the primary ways YAPG works to better our region:
Business attraction, retention and expansion
Economic developers are tasked with recruiting investors and companies to our region in order to expand the tax base and create new jobs. Because existing businesses are crucial to our local economy, YAPG also offers services to help local businesses problem-solve, succeed and expand.
This might be as simple as offering advice or technical assistance. Or it might entail helping a company find the capital and incentives they need to start up and grow. Whether it’s loans, grants or tax breaks, South Dakota has incentives to encourage local investment.
Marketing and promotion
Economic developers are at the forefront of marketing cities and regions to attract prospective investors and residents. We work to pinpoint our region’s assets in order to promote them to the world.
The Greater Yankton Living website was designed by YAPG specifically to promote the exceptional quality of life we have in our region.
Assistance with workforce development
Finding skilled workers is one of the primary challenges for businesses today. That’s why YAPG works closely with local partners to help build and maintain a strong local workforce.
Area businesses can benefit from resources like the Regional Technical Education Center (RTEC). The nonprofit technical education organization is funded through partnerships with businesses. RTEC works to provide high quality, affordable technical education opportunities and even offers custom-designed, on-demand training to area employers.
Support for entrepreneurs and small businesses
YAPG is a resource for new and developing companies. Our staff are knowledgeable about business permitting and licensing processes and we can help business owners connect with the right resources and supportive organizations to help them thrive.
Improving life in Yankton
Economic Development Week is a chance to recognize economic developers, the local leaders, and organizations like YAPG that work tirelessly to recruit investors, develop businesses, create jobs, enhance the tax base, and ultimately improve quality of life for our communities.
